It matches on interests rather than pure chance, it asks people to rate each other after a conversation, and it feeds that karma back into who you meet. That is the correct diagnosis of what was wrong with random chat. We disagree with them about exactly one thing, and it is the thing that decides whether any of it works.
Karma is for sale
Emerald Chat sells karma packs — around six dollars to repair a damaged score. To their credit, they say outright abusers are blocked from buying at all, and that is a meaningful limit.
It is still fatal to the mechanism. A reputation exists to tell a stranger something they cannot otherwise know, and the moment it can be topped up with a card, what it tells them is that this person had six dollars. Everyone downstream is now reading a number that means two different things depending on how it was obtained, and they cannot tell which.

Here the only input to your rating is other people rating you after real conversations, and there is no way to buy, transfer or reset it. New accounts sit at NEW until enough separate people have rated them, so a fresh account cannot borrow anyone else’s standing.
