How many were conversations?
Chatrandom has been running since 2011 and advertises something on the order of a hundred billion connections made. It is a fair number and a revealing one: connections are what the site counts, because connections are what it produces. A conversation is a different unit, and much rarer.
More modes, one primitive
Chatrandom offers random cam chat, gender filters, country selection and themed rooms. Underneath all of them the primitive is unchanged — you are placed with a stranger about whom you know nothing, and you both decide in a second.
Adding modes widens the menu without changing what is on the plate.
Why the counting matters
A site that measures connections will get more of them, and the cheapest way to make a connection is to make leaving easy. That is not a criticism of anyone’s intentions; it is what the metric does. It is also why these sites feel identical whatever the branding.
The number we care about is whether two people talked again, which is why the product is built around adding somebody afterwards rather than around throughput.
Starting from a subject
You choose what the conversation is about before you are matched — a language you are practising, signing, code, music, whatever is running. Matching starts from that and from the languages you share, which is the one filter a conversation genuinely cannot do without.
Then you see who they are, and their rating, and you both agree before video opens. Afterwards you rate each other, and if it went well you can add them and pick it up another day.

How is this different from Chatrandom?
You pick the subject before matching, you see a profile and a peer rating before the camera opens, both people have to agree, and you can stay in touch afterwards. Chatrandom is built for volume of connections; this is built for the conversation being worth having.
Are there themed rooms?
Channels are the equivalent — sign language, practicing a language, tech, music, climate, philosophy — and any member can start one. You can also match on a free-text subject rather than a channel.
Do I need to sign up?
Yes, and it is free. Without an account there is nothing for a rating, a block or a report to attach to, which is the mechanism the whole thing rests on.
