What Conversation Exchange does well

It offers three kinds of exchange: meeting in person where you live, writing as penpals, and chatting by text, voice or video. Its front page says it is free of charge, and its interface comes in eleven languages. For chat it points you at whatever software you prefer: its own ChitChat, Skype, Hangouts and similar.

If you want a partner to meet for coffee, or a correspondent to write to for a year, use it. We do neither.

Where a directory stops

Its FAQ describes the way in: you search the member database yourself and message people, and results are sorted by when each person last logged in. That is a good way to build a list of candidates. It is a slow way to have a conversation, because every step after the search waits on somebody else reading a message and answering it, and having logged in recently is not the same as being free right now.

Its membership page says the paid NOADS tier removes ads and messaging limits, which means a free account carries both. That is a fair price for a free service run since 2005. It is also one more thing between you and the first sentence.

What we do instead

You say which languages you speak and how well (native, fluent, conversational or still learning) and which one you are practicing. Matching looks first for your mirror image: someone who speaks what you are learning and is learning what you speak. That is a preference and not a filter, so when nobody like that is here you still meet somebody who shares a language rather than waiting.

Before any camera opens you see their profile, their languages and a rating from people who have actually talked to them, and you can text first. Video starts in your browser when you both agree. There is no download and no second program to arrange a call in.

Levels are self-declared and nothing here tests them. What is checked is the rating.

What you give up

Reach, honestly. Conversation Exchange has had two decades to collect members and ChatFederation opened in September 2026, so a directory will always have more names to search than a new network has people online. On a quiet language pair you may wait.

Waiting is not a dead end. You can schedule a conversation from ten minutes out, put it on the board for your language and share the link with a friend or a classmate. But it is a different bargain from a long list of names, and you should know which one you are choosing.
